Introduction to Putty Mortar And its applications

In addition to being called putty jointing mortar or simply putty, putty mortar has a smoother consistency and is frequently used for finishing touches and repairs. Before painting or further finishing, it is commonly used to fill small cracks, gaps, or imperfections in walls, ceilings, or other surfaces.

What is the putty mortar ?

Typically, a putty mortar is made by mixing water, cement, fine sand, lime, and sometimes additional additives, such as polymers, pigments, and fillers, together. A putty mortar is used for finishing and smoothing interior as well as exterior walls.

Putty mortar has a PH value of between 12 and 13, indicating that it is an alkaline substance. It has low water absorption, making it resistant to water and moisture. It also does not contain any toxic substances, which makes it safe for residential and commercial buildings to use.

Suitable for residential and commercial buildings, it has good workability, adhesion, hardness, durability, and provides a smooth finish.

Application and how to use it ?

Construction and decoration can both benefit from the use of putty mortar.

  • Wall Imperfections: used to smooth out cracks, pits, and other irregularities in walls.

  • Modification of surfaces: used to improve the appearance of walls, ceilings, or other surfaces.

  • Adhesive for wallpaper: helps the wallpaper stick to the wall.

  • Making molds: This is a process used in the sculpture, art, and relief industries to obtain the desired shape and detail by forming molds.

In general, the following steps should be followed when using putty mortar:

  • Clean and prepare surfaces before restoration or decoration. Make sure the surface is dry, dust-free and free from oils.

  • Mix the putty powder and appropriate amount of water in a clean container according to the instructions on the putty product manual.

  • Using a putty brush or scraper, apply putty to the surface that will be repaired or decorated. Putty can be applied as many times as necessary to achieve desired levelness and thickness. Be careful not to overapply the putty as this will negatively affect it’s drying time and quality.

  • When the putty mortar dries, it depends on ambient conditions and the thickness of the layer. It typically takes a few hours or a day to dry. Use sandpaper or a polishing tool to lightly sand the surface after the putty has completely dried in order to make it smoother.

  • To complete the final decoration, paint, paint, or wallpaper may be applied according to the needs.

Manufacturing Producing Process of Putty Mortar

Generally, putty powder is produced using the following steps and equipment:

  • In order to improve product stability and storage life, sieved putty powder is dried in rotary dryers or fluidized bed dryers to remove moisture. After sieving coarse off-spec particles, the product quality and consistency are ensured. Commonly used equipment includes vibrating screens and cyclone separators.

  • The primary raw materials for putty powder include gypsum, cementitious materials (such as cement), fillers, additives, etc. These raw materials require warehousing and the preparation of ingredients.

  • Using a mixer or mixing tank, mix the raw materials according to a certain ratio. By mixing or stirring, the various raw materials are uniformly mixed, resulting in a pre-mixture of putty powder. To improve production efficiency and quality, other auxiliary equipment, such as conveyor belts, weighing systems, vacuum devices, etc., may also be used throughout the production process.
